Bartow suffers first loss of seasonby Mark KingLast week on Tuesday night, the Bartow High School Lady Jackets softball team honored their seniors in the Lady Bugs’ last regular season home appearance by defeating the Lake Region Lady Thunder 6 – 0 in front of a standing-room-only stadium (and outfield) of appreciative fans.Marissa Ortiz, Lizzie Glass, Jessica Eiland, Emily Sanders, Brittney McNeil, and Kimmy Booker were all the recipients of kudos and blooms this night as they shined on the field and in the hearts of parents and friends. Coach Rutenbar also got into the act, sharing his thoughts on the seniors in an open letter read over the PA system. Later in the week, the coach probably gave them a much different…much more private…set of thoughts. More on that later. But on this night, the Jackets were rocking. Lauren “Wild Wild” West (12 – 0) was the winning pitcher for senior night, serving up the Yellow Jackets’ 20th win of the season. Brittney “Big Mac” McNeil, Rachael “Bubbles” Imig and Lizzie “Shattering” Glass all went two-for-three at the plate as the team pounded out ten hits. “Dandy” Danielle Yost, Shelby “Mustang” Duncan, Emily “True Grit” Sanders, and Marissa “Emmo” Ortiz also hit for the team. Okay, that’s the team high of the week. Now, for the low. On Friday, Bartow suffered its first loss of the season when they traveled to George Jenkins High School to battle the Eagles. The Eagles rose to the challenge, and even though they were outhit 6 - 4, they defeated BHS by the score of 2 – 1 behind the plate performance of Theresa Butler who went two-for-four and belted in the winning run. We don’t like her. (Actually, we do. Great kid. Thanks a lot. Don’t do it again.) For the Lady Bugs, Lauren West (12 – 1) took the loss, giving up four hits and fanning four. On offense, the hitters for ‘Tow were: Duncan, Taylor “Stitch” Wagner, McNeil, Ortiz, Glass and Sanders. But at the end of it all, the dream of a Jackets perfect season is over. They are 20 – 1 on the season as of this writing. In some ways, a loss at this time could be good for the team. A lot of pressure is off and the team can start concentrating on each individual game again and not so much on “the season.” As Coach Glenn Rutenbar says, “It can help us or hurt us.” We know drama. After this week’s away games with McKeel on Tuesday and Ocala Forest on Friday, BHS will head into the post season with the District Tournament to be held at Lake Region during the week of April 18th. The quest for State starts anew. |
Lady Jackets Continue to Rollby Mark KingThe Auburndale High School Lady Bloodhounds had a mission when they entered Lady Jacket Stadium: to take down the Bartow High School Lady Yellow Jackets’ perfect softball season record. And they made a battle of it, even going ahead of the Jackets 2 – 0 when the ‘Hounds’ shortstop lined a shot over the left field fence in the top of the second inning. Even though they found themselves on the short end of the scoring stick, the Lady bugs did not panic. They just started knuckling down and doing what championship type teams do: Chip, chip, chip away. The first chip came in the third inning when Jessica “Fantasy” Eiland ripped a double into right-center. Two batters later, Brittany “Big Mac” McNeil belted a single to score Eiland from third. Then in the fourth inning, chips fell like the bags under a Bloodhound’s eyes. The Jackets scored four runs on four base hits in the inning. Kimmy “the Good” Booker had the big hit, a laser shot double. Taylor “Stitch” Wagner led all batters with two hits. Other hitters included: Emily “True Grit” Sanders, Rachael “Bubbles” Imig, Shelby “Mustang” Duncan and Lizzie “Shattering” Glass. Leading the defense for BHS was ace Lauren “Wild Wild” West (11 – 0). West was a little off her game, but still game enough to rack up another big win for Bartow. She gave up six hits and struck out three over seven innings. Other defensive highlights included a gutsy catch by Booker, who raced to the backstop to catch a ball in the top of the sixth. Later in the same inning, Duncan raced in to make a great catch in left field as a ball tried to crash on the grass. Next Tuesday is the final regular season home game for the Lady Yellow Jackets for 2011. It will be senior night, honoring Marissa Ortiz, Lizzie Glass, Jessica Eiland, Emily Sanders, Brittany McNeil and Kimmy Booker. All Lady Jacket softball fans are encouraged to attend the game to salute this truly outstanding group of young student athletes, and thank them for four years of incredible softball action. |
Lady Jackets Remain Unbeatenby Mark KingThe Bartow High School Lady Jackets’ softball team had a “Lake-lustered” week with three victories over Lake Gibson, Lake Wales and Lakeland. The first pond to be pounded was Lake Gibson. The Lady Braves were scalped by the Yellow Jackets 17 – 1 at LGHS on Tuesday, March 22nd. Seventeen to one. That is the definition of scalped. Look it up. Jessica “Fantasy” Eiland (3 – 0) was the winning pitcher for Bartow. The sensational senior pitcher blew away six batters at the plate and gave up only one hit. The Lady Jacket offense was led by Rachael “Bubbles” Imig, who belted a homer, crushed a double, and racked four RBI while going batting .750 in the ballgame. Emily “True Grit” Sanders, matched Imig’s homer, double and RBI’s while going three for five at the platter. Also helping out the Bug batting were: Lizzie “Shattering” Glass (3 – 4, 2B, RBI), Marissa “Emmo” Ortiz (3 – 4), Shelby “Mustang” Duncan (3 – 4, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI), Wanda “Lightning” Darby (2 – 2, RBI), Taylor “Stitch” Wagner (2 – 4, 2B, 2 RBI), Eiland (2 – 4), and “Dandy” Danielle Yost (1 – 2, RBI). Next Lake on the list was Lake Wales. The Highlanders reached a low point with a 12 – 0 loss on Wednesday, March 23rd, to their bitter foes: our beloved Lady Bugs of Bartow High. In recent years, the Lady Highlanders have had the better of Bartow. Not so this year. Not by a long shot. The Lady Jackets scored in every inning they played except the fifth (the final inning in the game). When the bleeding stopped for the Highlanders, the Bugs blasted the Bagpipers with eleven hits. Lauren “Wild Wild” West (10 – 0) recorded the win for Coach Rutenbar and all the fans giving up two hits over four innings while fanning six batters. On the offense, “Bubbles” Imig batted .500 with a double and three RBIs. Following close behind was “Fantasy” Eiland (2 – 3, 3 RBIs). Two Bartow Bug batters belted two-baggers: “True Grit” Sanders (2 – 3) and “Mustang” Duncan (2 – 4), while Kimmy “the Good” Booker (1 for 2) had four RBIs. After the Highlanders high-tailed it out of Lady Jacket Stadium, the Bugs boarded the big yellow bus to rumble up to Lakeland High School to engage the dreaded Dreadnaughts. Actually, it was more like meeting the “deflated” Dreadnaughts. In yet another shutout, the Lady Yellow Jackets demolished the Dreads 16 – 0, behind the pitching of “Bubbles” Imig (4 – 0) and Tiffany “Last Dance” Waltz. The two teammates turned in a no-hitter walking one batter and striking out seven. If you’re a fan of hitting (and who isn’t?), you had to be at this game. The Lady Bugs belted 20 hits in route to the victory. Once again, the Bartow Bug batting ensemble blew away the completion with “True Grit” Sanders and “Shattering” Glass each getting homers. Doubles were drummed out by Sanders, Imig, and “the Good” Booker. When the lake lambasting was done at the end of the week, the Lady Yellow Jackets of BHS improved their season record to 18 – 0 and plastered a big smile on the face of their head coach, Glenn Rutenbar. “Obviously, we’re real excited about the team this year. Hopefully, we will continue to play well,” he says. The junior varsity “Baby Bugs” also had a great week, defeating the Lake Gibson Lady Braves 16 – 1 and the Lake Wales Highlanders 10 – 2. In the Lake Gibson game, Kalissa Sexton pitched a no-hitter, fanning five batters. Emily DelleDonne, Aliah Wlters, Lexi Mathis and Carmen Billante were the leading hitters. When the team met the Highlanders, they sent them packing behind the pitching of DelleDonne. Brooke Farrer, Savannah Browder, Billante, Taylor Pittman, Sierra Coffman, Walters, Delaney Wright (the Wright girl for the LEFT field), and Lexi Mathis all racked hits for Bartow. As of this printing, the Ladies will have played Auburndale High on Tuesday, March 29th. The story will be printed in an upcoming edition of the Democrat. On Tuesday, April 5th, the last home game of the regular season will be played against the Lake Region Thunder, with a JV game at 5:30 and varsity at 7:30pm. Since the LR game will be the last home game of the season, it will be Senior Night, when we honor the team seniors: Marissa Ortiz, Lizzie Glass, Jessica Eiland, Emily Sanders, Brittany McNeil, and Kimmy Booker. These ladies have worked very hard over the last four years and have had amazing careers. They deserve a big send off from all the BHS faithful. We hope to see you there! |
Annual Home of Champions Tournamentby Mark KingThe Lady Yellow Jackets of Bartow High School had a really busy “off week.”Even though it was Spring Break, the Ladies hosted the third annual Home of Champions Softball Tournament last Friday and Saturday. The tournament takes over the softball fields at BHS and the 555 softball complex in Bartow every year. Bartow went four-for-four in their games against Lakewood Ranch, Durant, Alachua Santa Fe, and Braden River high schools. In the first game, played against the Mustangs of Lakewood Ranch, the Bartow Lady Bugs pounded the ponies 9 – 0. In the circle, it was Rachael “Bubbles” Imig booking the win for ‘Tow tossing six innings and striking out four batters while giving up just two hits. Of course, any Glenn Rutenbar coached team is going to have sterling defensive fundamentals. But these athletes like to stretch themselves, like Shelby “Mustang” Duncan did in the second inning. With one down, Lakewood’s Amber Wimmer lined a shot to shallow left field, but Duncan turned on the afterburners and raced in to make a great diving catch, snagging the ball just before it hit the turf. Offensively, the Jackets had 14 hits. Lizzie “Shattering” Glass had a perfect plate performance (4 – 4). Other batting highlights included: Emily “True Grit” Sanders (3 – 4, 3 RBI), Brittany “Big Mac” McNeil (2 – 4, 1 RBI), and Duncan (2 – 4, 2 runs). In the next game, the Alachua Santa Fe Raiders brought their pitcher Shelby Morgan to meet the battling, batting Bugs of Bartow High. Morgan had a great pitching style, with a lot of motion on her throws. But this bunch of BHS Bugs likes to swing the bat. So far this year, they haven’t met a pitcher they can’t eventually hit. And this game was no different with the Jackets coming out on top again, 4 – 0. Bartow wound up getting a total of six hits, with Sanders giving a standout performance. “True Grit” was two for three with a double and a triple. Lauren “Wild Wild” West was the winning pitcher for BHS. In a battle of ball tossers, West won, fanning twelve. West is the team’s ace this year, with a righteous rise ball and a fiery fast ball. Game three saw the Cougars of Durant High School in Plant City trying to cage the Lady Jackets. Behind the arm of Jessica “Fantasy” Eiland, BHS de-clawed the Cougars 14 – 2. Eiland struck out six batters in five innings of work, giving up only two hits. At shortstop for the Lady Jackets, Marissa “Emmo” Ortiz had a banner game. In the fifth inning, Ortiz ate some clay, diving into the dirt to make a fantastic catch. Then, the very next inning, with one down and a runner on base, Durant’s Shay Bell belted a worm burner to Ortiz’s right. Ortiz raced over and made a back-handed catch, then spun and threw on one foot to first base to record the second out of the inning. Suffice it to say, the Lady Jackets’ offense was on fire. As a team, the Bugs had 18 base hits. Yeah. Eighteen. Oh…and two of them were over the fence! The first homer came in the very first inning. With two Bugs on base, Lizzie “Shattering” Glass cranked one over deep center field to start the scoring off for Bartow, racking 3 runs with just one swing. Sanders got the team’s second homer in the seventh inning, when BHS was on a run racking tear. This time, the guys in the cheap seats in left field were sent scurrying as the ball soared over the fence. When the dust settled in the seventh, the Lady Jackets creamed the Cougars with five runs in that inning. Leading the Jacket hitters were: Duncan (4 -5, 3 RBI) Taylor “Stitch” Wagner (4 – 5, 2 runs), McNeil (3 – 5, 4 runs), Sanders (2 – 5, 3RBI, HR, 2B), Glass (1 – 4, 2 RBI, HR). In the championship game of the Home of Champions Tournament, Bartow squeezed out a 2 – 0 victory over the Pirates of Braden River. It was a championship atmosphere to be sure. Both teams played well, with terrific defense and timely hitting. The Lady Jackets were once again led in the pitcher’s circle by Lauren West (9 – 0). West found herself in a pitching duel and knuckled down to come out with the winning hand, giving up four hits while fanning 11. Another defensive highlight for the tournament was displayed for BHS when Imig raced back behind her third base position to make an over-the-shoulder snag for the third out in the third inning. Imig was on full-throttle when she stretched out and snagged the ball as it tried to land in the grass. Offensively, the Jackets hit well cranking eight in the ballgame against Pirate pitcher Courtney Mirabella. Twice the Jackets were forced to leave the bases loaded without scoring runs. For the championship game, Mirabella blew the ball past six Lady Jacket hitters. The leading Bartow Bug batters at the platter were: Glass (3 -4, 1 RBI, 2B), Sanders (2 – 4, 2B), and Wagner (1 – 2, 1 RBI). With the four victories in the tournament, Bartow increases its season record to 15 – 0. Coach Glenn Rutenbar wants to thank all the Bartow faithful who came out to support the team. On Friday, March 11th, the Lady Jackets softball team traveled to Naples to grapple with the Golden Eagles. Bartow stung the Birdies 8 – 2 in a meeting of two of the premier softball programs in the state. The Lady Bug’s amazing ace, Lauren West, eliminated eleven Eagles with strike-outs while allowing three hits. The Bug batters blasted 12 hits in the ballgame with Glass leading all (3 – 4, 3 RBI, 2B). Other hitters were: Wagner (2 – 3, RBI), Sanders (2 – 4, RBI), Duncan (2 – 4), McNeil (2 – 5), Imig (1 – 3, RBI). The junior varsity also played Naples and won 10 – 0 behind the practically perfect pitching of Emily DelleDonne (2 – 1) who pitched four innings, fanning nine. Leading hitters for the Baby Bugs were: Brooke Farrer (3 – 4), Sierra Coffman (3 – 4), Savannah Browder (2 – 3), and Shanna Whitcomb (1 – 1, 3B, 3 RBI). This year’s team is looking like one of the best in the program’s 25 year history. How far they will go is still to be seen, but you can help support the team by buying a copy of the team’s commemorative program. It is a beautiful full-colored publication with complete schedules, photos of each athlete and great action shots. It’s just $10 and available at the games. The fans who published the program are giving 100 percent of the money to the team. You gotta love our fans! This week, the Lady Jackets played at Lake Gibson High School last night and tonight host the talented team from Lake Wales, the Lady Highlanders. Games are at 5:30 and 7:30pm. On Thursday the varsity Bugs travel to Lakeland to try to sink the Dreadnaughts in a 7pm game. |
Unbeaten Bugs Win 5-0 over Auburndaleby Mark KingThe Bartow High School Lady Yellow Jackets softball team continued its winning ways on Friday, February 25th, with a 5 – 0 drubbing of district foes, the Bloodhounds of Auburndale High School. With the win, played in Auburndale, the Jackets’ record increases to 6 – 0 overall and 4 – 0 in the district.Lauren “Wild Wild” West was magnificent in the circle for Bartow, fanning 13 batters in seven innings and giving up just one hit. That hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning and ruined a perfect game for West, but didn’t diminish the shine on her performance as far as her coach was concerned. “Lauren threw great,” Coach Glenn Rutenbar said with eyes wide and a big smile on his face. “Everything she’s throwing right now is moving.” The ball is also moving on the offense for the Lady Bugs. Marissa “Emmo” Ortiz led the batters going 2 for 3 at the plate, including a triple and an RBI. Kimmy “the Good” Booker was also 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Shelby “Mustang” Duncan batted .500 with a 2 for 4 performance. DeeAn “D2” Davis, Lizzie “Shattering” Glass, Wanda “Lightning” Darby, and “Dandy” Danielle Yost also got hits for the Lady Bugs. On Monday night, February 28th, it was the Junior Varsity squad’s time to shine as they hosted the McKeel Academy Wildcats in a solo game at One Bug Place: Lady Jackets Stadium. A good crowd was on hand to watch the Baby Bugs come from a three run deficit to defeat the ‘Cats behind the pitching of Brooke Farrer. Heck, they even had people along the outfield fence watching the Jackets…for a JV game! You gotta love this town! Farrer started off a little shaky, with the heavy wind playing havoc with her pitches. But she settled down after giving up three runs on three hits in the top of the first and did not allow another run over the next four innings, while striking out four. Carmen Billante got the honors for outstanding offensive performance, crushing two doubles and belting a sacrifice fly. Other doubles were recorded by Sierra Coffman, and Aliah Walters. Taylor Pittman, DeLaney Wright and Summer Tilley also got hits in the game. Next week the Lady Jackets will play a double header against George Jenkins High School on Tuesday, March 8th. The Eagles will fly into Lady Jacket Stadium for a 5:30 game with the junior varsity team and a 7:30 match-up with the varsity. Then, on Thursday, March 10th, the Red Devils of Kathleen materialize on the Jackets home turf in an attempt to put a scare into the Bugs perfect season at 7:00pm. Then, it’s a long bus ride on Friday to Naples High School to take on the Golden Eagles in a battle of two of the state’s premier softball programs. |
Lady Jackets Post Another Victoryby Mark KingOn Thursday, the Bugs boarded the big, yellow bus and boogied to Lake Wales to meet up with their old rivals the Lady Highlanders. In this meeting of two of the state’s softball powerhouses, the BHS Lady Yellow Jackets came out on top with an 8 – 1 victory. Lauren “Wild Wild” West got the call from Coach Glenn Rutenbar to start the game. West allowed just one hit in five innings while whiffing 10 Bagpiper batters. Imig finished the game throwing in the final two innings. She struck out one and gave up three hits, allowing one run. One thing is for sure with this 2011 edition of the Lady Jackets. They like to hit the dang ball! This time the team had nine total hits. Leading the Bug batters was Glass (2-3, RBI), followed by Sanders (1-3, RBI), Kimmy “the Good” Booker (1-4, RBI), Duncan (1-3, RBI). McNeil had a triple, Davis racked a double, while Taylor “Stitch” Wagner and Darby also had hits. |
Bartow Contuines Winning Waysby Mark KingIt was a busy time for the Bartow High School Lady Jackets softball team as they played both Lakeland and Lake Wales during the middle of last week.Wednesday, the Dreadnaughts sailed into One Bug Place hoping to sink the Jackets. Instead, the Lady Bugs torpedoed Lakeland 10 – 0, Bartow’s third shutout so far this season. Jessica “Fantasy” Eiland was the starter for BHS, tossing four innings of no-hit ball and fanning nine Naughts. Tiffany ”Last Dance” Waltz finished the game in the fifth with no hits and one strikeout. On the offense, the Bug bats continued to blaze, as the team got 14 hits. Emily “True Grit” Sanders led all batters going three-for-four at the plate and earning 2 RBI. Rachael “Bubbles” Imig was perfect at the platter with three hits in three trips; and Shelby “Mustang” Duncan was two-for-four. Other hitters included: DeeAn “D-Squared” Davis, Wanda “Lightning” Darby, Brittany “Big Mac” McNeil, Marissa “Emmo” Ortiz, Lizzie “Shattering” Glass, and “Dandy” Danielle Yost (aka: “Noodle”). |
Lady Jackets Win 15-1by Mark KingThe Lake Gibson High School Lady Braves lived up to their nicknames as they battled bravely against the Lady Yellow Jackets in Lady Jackets Stadium on the campus of Bartow High School last Friday night. But the bravery didn’t prevent them from getting a hatchet job by the Lady Bugs and getting scalped 15 – 1 in five innings of play.Lauren West was the winning pitcher from the circle, with Rachael Imig and Jessica “Fantasy” Eiland providing the clean-up work in later innings. Offensively, the bats for the Bugs were a-buzzing. Emily Sanders got two triples, Kimmy “The Good” Booker smacked a couple of doubles and a single, and Shelby “Mustang” Duncan ripped three singles. Brittany McNeil, Taylor “Stitch” Wagner, Danielle Yost and Wanda Darby also had hits. Defense for both teams were also sharp. For Bartow, Booker teamed up with Lizzie Glass to nail a runner at first. It happened in the top of the second. After a long (and I mean long) first inning, the Lady Braves got a runner at first with one out. When the runner took a little too long of a lead off the bag, Booker, Bartow’s catcher, threw a rope down to Glass covering first. Glass applied the tag while the runner tried to dive back to the bag. In the bottom of the third, the Jackets had a runner at first with no outs when Glass hit a grounder to Braves shortstop, Emily Wilds. Wilds scooped up the ball ran to second then gunned down Glass at first for the game’s only double play. Next up for the Lady Jackets: the Lakeland Dreadnaughts sail into One Bug Place for a double header tonight. Junior varsity’s first pitch is at 5:30 while the varsity starts its game at 7:30. |
Lady Jackets Win, in Delayed Season Openerby Mark KingFor the Bartow High School Lady Yellow Jackets softball team, the 2011 season started out all wet when their scheduled season opener was rained out on Thursday. But the team exploded with a 15 – 0 rout over the McKeel Academy Wildcats on Friday at Lady Jackets Stadium. The Lady Bugs scored in every complete inning in the mercy-rule shortened game. Bartow plated six in the first, three in the second, two in the third and finished with four more in the bottom of the fourth. Recording the win from the pitcher’s circle was Lauren West for BHS who fanned four in four innings of work. Tiffany Waltz took over in the top of the fifth to close out the win for Bartow. Leading hitters for the Lady Jackets were: Kimmy “the Good” Booker, who went three-for-three with four RBI; Shelby “Mustang” Duncan who scored four runs while batting three-for-three with two RB; and Emily Sanders with four RBI in a three-for-four plate performance. “I was pleased about the way we played on Friday,” Coach Glenn Rutenbar said. “All areas of the game were looking good.” One area of the game that coaches can’t often control is the emotional side of the game. This one had emotions aplenty as one key team player, catcher Kimmy Booker, lost her mother to an illness earlier in the week. Kathy Dobson, Kimmy’s mom, would have been proud of the way her daughter handled the situation. “Kimmy has been strong,” Rutenbar commented. “She had a great game. I was so excited for her.” Life is so much more than just a game, but often how we handle ourselves in games during times of crisis or loss helps to define us. Look up Kimmy Booker and the definition reads, “Winner.” The next home game for the Lady Jackets is this Friday, February 18th, when they host the Lady Braves of Lake Gibson High School at 7:30pm. |
